How Flowers Support Health and Well Being in Everyday Living

It is our mission at Mary Martha’s Floral to shine a light on the power and potential that plants and flowers have on our everyday lives. We believe that the global shift toward social distancing and the isolation we have all experienced due to Covid over the last year has clearly shown us just how important living with nature can be. Experiencing the healing power of something as simple as giving or receiving a plant or bouquet can have a great impact on health and make us feel connected to each other and our planet.

Even under normal circumstances, Americans spend nearly 90% of their lives indoors.  There is no wonder why bringing nature inside to beautify our spaces is so imperative. Highlighting how we can support others and protect our mental health couldn't be more important than right now.  Long after the physical symptoms of the virus are gone, living a healthier life that includes more plants and flowers will be essential for us to cope and recover.

Numerous studies have shown the undeniable effects that flowers have on our mental and physical well being.  At Mary Martha’s Floral we have seen first hand the messages of hope, camaraderie, love and tenderness that go out with each bouquet that we deliver. It’s incredibly uplifting to be a part of that equation.  To know that something as simple as flowers have the ability to boost our mood and mental health is truly powerful and we take pride in nurturing that spirit of giving when creating our designs. Here are just a few examples of how flowers and plants help promote healthy living:

Flowers and plants enhance creativity…..

When a space is thoughtfully decorated with living plants and fresh cut flowers, the creative senses are heightened and productivity actually increases. Whether in the workplace or in a home office, they inspire energy and enthusiasm.  Job satisfaction is also a common side affect.

Flowers and plants are a great source for building connections with others…..

Sending and receiving flowers are a great way to connect with people that we care about.  Regardless if you are near or far, showing family members and loved ones how much you care can really help fight feelings of isolation and loneliness.  The added vibrancy that a living plant or floral arrangement adds to the environment is also undeniable.  Whether you are the giver or the receiver, connecting with others via a hand made creation personalizes a great connection in an age where virtual connections and cell phone messaging are the norm.  This can be especially helpful for the elderly or for those that are isolated and homebound.

Flowers and plants boost our mood for many days…..

Flowers definitely brighten a room, but did you know that research proves that when a floral arrangement is present in a room, it actually promotes a positive environment and uplifts your mood? Additionally, the impact last for days! They reduce anxiety, help with depression and remedy stress.  Sometimes just the fragrance alone can relieve anxiety and promote a more focused mental state.

Flowers and plants make people smile….

A simple gesture can turn a tough day into a great day.  When you send flowers to someone it makes you feel good and it makes the person receiving them feel amazing.  Receiving even a single bloom or something that was picked from the garden can lift others out of a low point.  Flowers have a language all of their own.  They convey emotions that words cannot and are the perfect pick me up.

Flower and plant therapy is real…they can actually help heal!

When someone who is ill or injured receives flowers, studies have proven that they actually heal quicker and recovery time is greatly reduced.  Their presence alone can help lower heart rate, fatigue and blood pressure!   We spend lots of time and energy on healthy eating and fitness, but adding some flower therapy into our health regime has lasting benefits as well.
